What are the course's aims?

This practical 90-minute workshop aims to break the cycle of stress and anxiety by teaching three powerful, in-the-moment skills. The goal is for participants to leave feeling more equipped and in control when faced with daily workplace challenges. They will learn how to apply mindfulness to create a crucial "pause" before reacting, practice cognitive distancing to observe their thoughts without being controlled by them, and utilise self-compassion as an effective tool to counter the negative impact of self-criticism during difficult situations.

Course Outline

  • Understanding the Stress Cycle: We begin by briefly explaining the feedback loop where anxious thoughts can trigger a physical stress response, highlighting the need for in-the-moment intervention.
  • Skill #1: The Power of the Pause: Participants are introduced to mindfulness as a practical tool for creating a moment of calm and choice before reacting to a stressor. This includes a short, guided breathing exercise.
  • Skill #2: Gaining Perspective: This section focuses on cognitive distancing, teaching participants how to see their thoughts as separate from themselves ("thoughts are not facts") to prevent being carried away by worry or negativity.
  • Skill #3: The Antidote to Self-Criticism: Participants learn the three components of self-compassion and how treating oneself with kindness during moments of failure or stress can build resilience and reduce emotional distress.
  • Integration and Q&A: A final summary of how to integrate these three skills into a daily work routine, followed by a Q&A session.
